Milly Matthews Artist and Illustrator

About Me
I am an artist and illustrator currently based in Nottingham. With a vibrant, playful identity, I mainly work with traditional mediums like paint and textiles, but also experiment digitally. My artwork extends itself through the world of art and music alongside contemporary social issues and sensitive subject areas, providing voices for those who are marginalised.

Riot Grrrl
Femicide Zine is a Riot Grrrl, Interactional Feminist, Arts and Culture Zine birthed in the UK by Imarni Boyer-Nugent. My contribution to Femicide Zine Issue 5 was producing two vector illustrations around supporting sex workers in visualising ‘Sex Work Is Work’ and ‘Riot Grrrl’ culture. This published collaboration supports my ‘Cost Of Living Crisis Sex Workers’ movement, via illustrating sex work is work, abolishing stigma which sex workers face daily within society.

Sex Work Is Work

Cost Of Living Crisis Sex Worker
I think it’s evident that sex workers are facing a crisis with multiple layers, yet, due to the cost of living crisis, there has been
a rise in women pushed into sex work to stay afloat and forcing women to do whatever work necessary to pay bills. Sex workers are having to put themselves in danger, accepting potentially dangerous clients who they would previously decline due to few clients.
‘Cost of Living Sex Workers’ is a subscription through Dolls Kill
a company which supports Hookers Against Hardship (HAH) organisation. Through Dolls Kill people can subscribe to a subscription which sends 10% of their purchases to campaign HAH. HAH is a campaign of sex worker-led organisation, aiming to raise awareness of specific experiences of sex workers during cost of living crisis.

Risky But It Felt Good Zine
Risky But It Felt Good zine is used as a medium to celebrate J.Ps exhibition and art form in a unique way. The zine celebrates the exhibition sharing personal and political views in an accessible manner through imagery alongside event information. Imagery is used to create connections with the meaning behind the exhibition, presented in a layout which adds significance and evokes associations with graffiti. Alongside the zine, I created a tufted wall hanging inspired by J.Ps graffiti transforming into ceramic pots
or paintings, FROM WALL TO PAPER. Using textiles techniques, £13.12 was tufted to situate alongside J.Ps exhibition paintings to highlight the use of unconventional design, mirroring elements of the zine to celebrate ‘Risky But It Felt Good’.

KLARNA KRISIS
So bitch... What’s the catch?
KLARNA KRISIS is an artistic weave visually representing the words of my dissertation, MAKING THE WORDS COUNT. This is done in a way that does not contribute to the sustainability issue by upcycling materials. Mimicking Klarna’s renowned pink, adverts, and colloquial language, illustrations and infographics express their damaging actions towards fast fashion. The infographics highlight ‘The Krisis’ and ‘Need or Greed’, providing the target audience (Gen Z and Millennial’s) context of the damaging effects of using Klarna.

YOU FOOL
You Fool t shirt merch celebrates my dad’s musical talent and history of being in a band in a way which links to rock culture. Even though my dad wasn’t famous, when I first went to see him play, 6 years old, I looked up to him as if he was. Inspiring my taste in music and who I am today. The t shirt is a monument of dad’s history and journey into rock music and illustrates a memory of my dad calling me a “Fool” for not getting a t shirt at the G‘N’R 2022 London reunion gig. This monument doesn’t just speak to one audience, yet myself, dad, and society – who appreciate rock music and may spark an interest to explore and start their own rock journey, as my dad inspired and influenced me.

Ladies In Ink
Ladies In Ink celebrates the history of female tattoo artists and the culture and challenges they faced to be accepted into the industry in the 19th and early 20th centuries. From tattooed ladies of circus freak shows, reflecting on professional tattooing which is focused on the contribution of men, this convention celebrates women who played a major role within this art form
and their struggles of not being fully accepted due to the hyper masculine tattoo culture still present within contemporary society.
